Waterloo, IA municipal broadband utility
The city of Waterloo is creating a municipal broadband utility to compete with private internet companies. The Waterloo City Council unanimously approved a $2.5 million contract with Magellan Advisors to design and engineer a 309-mile fiber-to-the-home network throughout the city. The design will provide a cost estimate, which is expected to be tens of millions of dollars, for building the system and voters will decide whether to approve a bond issue to pay for its construction.
