Buller District Council partnered with WestReef Services to launch a smoke testing wastewater programme. Smoke testing involves pumping dense white smoke into the sewer system through a manhole and following its path in the pipework. By monitoring where the smoke escapes to the ground surface the Council is able to identify ruptures in the pipework. Smoke testing is a proactive approach to prevent excessive stormwater from entering the wastewater system and increasing wastewater treatment costs.
