Charlotte, NC implemented a new occupancy detection system to verify vehicle occupants on toll roads
Charlotte, NC occupancy detection system toll roads
The City of Charlotte contracted I-77 Mobility Partners to implement a new occupancy detection system. The surveillance cameras use facial imaging to verify the number of occupants in each car. The system was designed to prevent drivers from skipping tolls by improperly using High Occupancy Vehicle lanes (HOV3+) which require at least three occupants to be in the vehicle. Drivers must declare HOV3+ status using the NC Quick Pass mobile app and violators are subject to a $100 fine.
