Christchurch City Council is installing backflow prevention devices at commercial and industrial sites to protect the local drinking water supply. Property owners are given the option to have the Council install the device on public land or have a professional installation on their private land. The average cost per property is $2,000 for the install and $150 a year for testing and maintenance. The Council is offering repayment plans for installations that cost over $1,000.
