The Smart Christchurch team worked with device inventor Ngarie Scartozzi on a real-world trial on the Ōtākaro Avon River. The eClean Bioreactor is powered by solar panels and filters water through an internal microbiome. This treatment process removes E.coli, nitrates, and phosphates from the water supply. Christchurch and Scartozzi are measuring the device's effectiveness before expanding its use to areas including local farm drainage.

Canterbury Regional Council's Civil Defence Emergency Management Group created a regional helpline to assist local residents during the COVID-19 lockdown. The helpline is designed for vulnerable people that are unable to access essential food, medication, baby supplies, pet supplies, etc. The group partnered with every district council in Canterbury to operate the helpline during normal business hours. The helpline number specific to Christchurch City will be operational at all times.
