Penticton, BC alcohol consumption in public spaces pilot

Complete

The City of Penticton conducted a one-month pilot to allow the consumption of alcohol in designated public spaces. The goal was to determine if outdoor alcohol consumption can occur responsibly. If successful, the City hoped the policy would encourage outdoor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. A key component of the pilot was collecting feedback from the community based on their experience at the designated public spaces through the "Shape Your City Penticton" engagement website.

Time to give feedback on alcohol consumption in select public places | City of Penticton

Residents are invited to provide feedback about what they have observed following the launch of a pilot project allowing alcohol consumption at designated parks. The City is formally collecting feedback about the project beginning today through to June 24.

Project Succeeded

A few incidents were reported but the types of calls received are not uncommon and may or may not be associated with the pilot project. No additional need for maintenance or care in the pilot locations or changes to waste and recycling were observed. The results of the random sample showed that 71% of the population either strongly (42%) or somewhat (29%) supported allowing consumption in designated public places.
