The city of Philadelphia launched a SmartBlockPHL pilot project to track environmental factors and monitor sidewalk usage. The pilot involves 14 smart streetlights used to accurately and efficiently collect real-time data by counting people and objects, detecting air quality, and monitoring weather conditions. The city will use this collected data to inform decisions about designing and modifying public spaces to better accommodate existing uses and needs.
