Selwyn District Council partnered with two scooter companies, Lime and Lava, to launch a six-month trial of e-scooters. The pilot included 50 Lava scooters and 200 Lime scooters which were allowed to travel on cycleways and park on public footpaths. The pilot marked the first time an e-scooter trial was conducted outside one of New Zealand's major urban areas.

Project Succeeded

The Council granted Lime and Lava each an initial one year license after the successful trial. Lava and Lime will have a total of 220 scooters that will operate in the area. Both companies will pay an annual license fee of $72.79 a year per scooter. During the trial, residents were taking about 3,800 rides a month for a total of 22,677 rides. There were no accidents or significant injuries reported over that time.
