Milton Keynes City Council, GB uses drone mapping to create digital twin

Milton Keynes City Council, in collaboration with Cranfield University and Satellite Applications Catapult Westcott DronePort, is trialing the use of drones to create a digital twin of the city center. This initiative aims to improve how essential and emergency services are delivered by mapping the area in detail for highway surveys and accident response. Drone flights will gather data to support services like smart traffic monitoring, secure parcel deliveries, and emergency responses.

New York, NY using digital twin technology to improve emergency response times

The NYC Fire Department is experimenting with digital twin technology in order to speed up emergency responses in traffic-congested areas. The yearlong project will create a digital twin of an FDNY district in West Harlem, and will allow researchers to assess why emergency response delays happen and simulate potential solutions before taking them onto actual streets. Ultimately the project hopes to provide real-time routing guidance to FDNY vehicles responding to medical emergencies.

Warner Robins, GA develops Citizen Safety Digital Twin for smart placement of license plate readers

Warner Robins received a Partnership for Inclusive Innovation grant for the twin's development. Recent crime data are mapped in the digital twin, resulting in optimal locations for license plate readers. City police place 10 Flock cameras at crime hotspots with regular rotations to new areas based on data trends. University researchers gather feedback from residents and community stakeholders to shape the digital twin's development.

Perry, IA collaborates with Foth Infrastructure & Environment on digital twin of public spaces

City officials sought a comprehensive sidewalk map as they evaluated ADA compliance. Foth determined a digital twin could capture accessibility and asset condition data at the same cost as the original concept. A mobile LiDAR imaging vehicle gathered 375,788 images of signs, structures, and sidewalks. The resulting digital twin helps Perry with initiatives like historic building restoration grants and autonomous public transit.

Hertfordshire County Council, GB partners on digital twin for air quality improvement

Six EarthSense Zephyr sensors across Hatfield Business Park monitor its real-time particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide levels. Air quality data are sent to a digital twin that also displays traffic patterns and weather forecasts. Business park tenants access a 3D map of environmental analytics useful in shaping emission reduction efforts. County officials are working with university researchers and technology partners to turn digital twin insights into smarter planning.

Bathurst Regional, NSW collaborates with state government on Spatial Digital Twin development

The state's Spatial Services team gathered aerial footage for the first-in-region digital twin. The 3D representation of Bathurst covers four million square meters with a two-centimeter resolution. Nine map layers provide location-specific data on fuel prices, EV charging stations, property sales, and disabled parking. Bathurst Regional and NSW are evaluating community feedback as they develop additional functionalities for the twin.

Barcelona, CT and BSC-CNS build a digital twin for the development of a 15-minute city

The first phase of the twin's development evaluates services available within 15-minute walks or bike rides of mass transit stops. The prototype can simulate solutions to resource shortages near transit routes based on existing plans and city data. Barcelona City Council will provide data to BSC-CNS for a second phase of the tool's development with university researchers. Digital twins capable of informing public policy decisions related to city planning are expected within four years.

Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, GB designs Local Area Energy Plan with IES digital twin

Local officials selected IES for a year-long project resulting in a Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP) for the borough. Building data from residential and commercial addresses are added to a digital twin. This virtual version of Calderdale supports simulations of whole-home retrofits, rooftop solar installations, and other proposed emission-reducing measures. The regional-first LAEP advances Calderdale's goal of net-zero emissions by 2038 and provides a blueprint for neighboring councils.

Jackson, MS addresses concerns about water access issues with digital twin built in InfoWater Pro

An August 2022 flood exposed issues with Jackson's water treatment and distribution systems. Satellite images, equipment data, and water sensor logs were inputted into InfoWater Pro. The resulting digital twin acts as a baseline for system performance across 17 water pumps and 800 miles of pipe. City officials develop more effective responses to water contamination, burst pipes, and flooding based on simulations in this virtual environment.

Dublin City Council, IE evaluates environmental impacts of housing retrofits with IES digital twin

Project partner IES developed a digital twin of three housing blocks on Dominick Street Lower. This model established energy and emissions baselines for each block. City officials sought simulations of four retrofit strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of houses dating back to the 1960s. Proposed strategies ranged from shallow retrofits to full renovations. The project identified deep retrofit as the most effective strategy for achieving emission reductions over 60 years.

Freiburg im Breisgau, BW tracks mobility and property trends with DATA:RAUM:FREIBURG project

Municipal officials used federal funding for the development of two digital twin prototypes. The local mobility prototype turns traffic data gathered from Telraam crowdsourcing technology into real-time views of active travel. A property management prototype tracks parcel data and availability in the Dietenbach district. DATA:RAUM:FREIBURG will turn prototype results into a centralized resource for departmental and IoT data by 2025.
